what are the primary differences between the SAT and ACT?
While both exams are accepted equally by colleges, they differ in structure, pacing and question style. Here are a few key differences to keep in mind:
The SAT
Approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes long
Consists of two sections:
Reading & Writing and Math
Typically less time-pressured but often relies on shorter, more nuanced questions that require careful reading and strategic thinking

The ACT
Approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes long
Consists of English, Math, Reading, & Science (plus optional writing section)
Tends to ask more straightforward questions but moves at a faster pace and covers a broader range of math topics

For most students, the better test is the one that aligns most closely with their strengths.
That's why we often begin the process with diagnostic testing, allowing us to compare performance across both exams and determine which offers the greatest opportunity for success.

how we'll work together
01
Schedule a Free Consultation
We’ll begin with a complimentary consultation call to get to know each other, talk through your or your student's goals and outline a plan for success. It’s a chance for you to ask questions and make sure tutoring feels like the right fit before we dive in.
02
Take Full Length Diagnostic Tests
Once we get started, students typically begin with two full-length diagnostic exams: one SAT and one ACT. This gives us insight into their academic strengths and helps determine which test may be the best fit. If a student already has a clear preference, we can skip this step and move directly into a personalized study plan.
03
Choose Our Focus: SAT or ACT
Once diagnostic results are in, we’ll identify the test that best aligns with the student’s strengths. With experience helping students navigate both the SAT and ACT, our team makes recommendations based on where each student is positioned to succeed most. At this point, we’ll also mail physical practice books directly to the student and provide access to our online testing platform.
04
Map Out a Detailed Study Plan
Next, we’ll get the student set up on our partnered online testing platform, establish a consistent meeting cadence, and get started! We’ll begin by focusing on the areas highlighted by diagnostic testing, targeting foundational gaps and prioritizing opportunities for early growth.
05
Performance Tracking Along the Way
Throughout the process, we continuously track performance and monitor progress to ensure students are building momentum over time. In addition to practice tests, we utilize custom-built tracking tools and learning resources that help categorize mistakes and pinpoint areas for improvement. This allows us to focus study time where it will have the greatest impact while continually refining each student's study plan based on their evolving needs.
06
Test Day Preparation
As test day approaches, we shift our focus toward execution. Students learn how to manage pacing, apply strategies under pressure, avoid common mistakes, and approach the exam with confidence. By the time they sit for the test, they'll have a clear plan, extensive practice experience, and a strong understanding of what to expect.
